Join us for this special concert that celebrates the 100th Anniversary of the birth of Gunther Schuller, a hero of American music in every way: composer, conductor, author, jazz historian, inventor of Third Stream Music, former president of the New England Conservatory of Music and the Tanglewood Music Institute. Along with two quintets written by Schuller, you will hear the world premiere of Debra Kaye’s “Out Of Many One”, commissioned by the ensemble with support from the New York State Council on the Arts Individual Grant program. Other mid-century composers will be featured including John Lewis, from the Modern Jazz Quartet; Ruth Crawford-Seeger and selections from Scott Joplin’s “Treemonisha”, an opera championed by Gunther Schuller.
